Roberto Garza wants to open people’s eyes by talking about what he’s most passionate about: public service. The Chicago offensive lineman, whose family emigrated from Mexico to the United States, is one of a small number of Hispanic players in professional football. In conjunction with the American Diabetes Association, he is teaching the Latino population about the dangers of diabetes that is so prominent in their community. He has also spearheaded Futbol Americano con Roberto, a program that introduces football to Hispanics, promotes healthy living and donates 24 tickets to Hispanic organizations throughout Greater Chicago for every home game. For his dedication to public service, Roberto was the Bears’ nominee for the 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. “It’s a great opportunity for me to use my professional athlete status to help out, make a difference and open people’s eyes,” said Roberto.
